A Citrus County look at stretching the family grocery budget

By Citrus County Independence

With grocery prices taking a larger bite out of household budgets, Citrus County families are looking for ways to save without sacrificing the foods they need.

Three of the biggest choices available locally are Walmart, Publix and ALDI.

But which one actually gives shoppers the best value?

The answer isn’t as simple as naming one winner.

Our research found that no single store is necessarily cheapest for everything. The better strategy may be knowing what each store does well and shopping accordingly.

Walmart: Strong Everyday Pricing

Walmart’s biggest advantage is its enormous selection combined with generally competitive everyday prices.

During our August 8, 2026 price research, examples included:

  • Milk around $3.17
  • Bread around $1.48
  • Ground beef around $6.92

Prices can change, and different brands, package sizes and store locations can produce different results, but Walmart remains an important option for families trying to control the total cost of a large grocery trip.

Walmart can also be convenient for shoppers who want groceries and household necessities in a single trip.

ALDI: Simplicity Can Mean Savings

ALDI takes a very different approach.

Rather than stocking dozens of brands of the same product, ALDI relies heavily on its own private-label products and maintains a smaller, more streamlined selection.

That business model can translate into lower prices on many staples.

Families willing to substitute store brands for nationally advertised brands may find significant opportunities to save.

The tradeoff is selection.

You may not find every particular brand or specialty item you’re looking for, which means ALDI may work best as the first stop rather than the only stop.

Publix: Shop the Sales

Publix has developed a loyal following throughout Florida because of its customer service, prepared foods, deli and shopping experience.

But shoppers concerned primarily with price need to pay attention to the weekly sales.

That’s where Publix can become much more competitive.

The company’s well-known Buy One, Get One Free β€” BOGO β€” promotions can create substantial savings when they involve products your family already uses.

The important part is avoiding the temptation to buy something simply because it is on sale.

A bargain isn’t a bargain if you didn’t need it.

So Which Store Wins?

There may not be one winner.

For many Citrus County families, the most economical strategy could be a combination of all three.

Buy staples and everyday necessities where they’re cheapest.

Check ALDI for private-label alternatives.

Watch Publix for worthwhile BOGO offers.

Compare Walmart’s everyday prices.

And most importantly β€” shop with a list.

Saving $10 by visiting three stores doesn’t necessarily make sense if you burn $8 worth of gas driving between them.

Time and transportation costs matter too.

The Grocery Game Plan

Before leaving home, take a few minutes to check the weekly advertisements and online prices.

Build meals around what’s already in your pantry and what’s currently on sale.

Then decide which store β€” or combination of stores β€” makes sense that week.

Don’t become loyal to a grocery store.

Become loyal to your family’s grocery budget.

A few dollars saved each week may not seem dramatic.

But saving $15 a week adds up to $780 a year.

For many Citrus County households, that’s real money.

CCI Bottom Line: Walmart, Publix and ALDI each have strengths. Smart shopping isn’t necessarily about finding the cheapest store. It’s about finding the cheapest basket of groceries for your family.
